Final GIF

So for my final project in one of my classes I have to do an animated GIF of one of my characters.  Here is Jed Garvey: Zombie Hunter.

Zombie Hunters

So I'm working on one of my finals.  I'll skip the details on what it entails, but here are two of the characters:

What I've Been Doing Lately

So I haven't posted anything from my school assignments, not sure why, but I'll continue with that trend today.  Here are a few of the things I've done recently.

I've started cartooning like this lately; since everyone has the ame basic face you really have to pick out certain characteristics to get across who it is.

The plumber for the Regency.

Spiderman--trying out a new style.

Animals!

So the class assignment this time was to do an animal caricature.  Super fun, and I think next week will be more or less the same so I'm pretty pumped.  My final idea is on top, but I shall include a few other sketches I did.

New Beginnings!

New is always nice.  Well, I guess that's not always true, but it is when new is better.  This is my new prized possession (I originally wrote my new baby, but now that I actually have a baby I will never again put anything on the same level as an actual child):

A SCANNER!!!  I have been very fortunate to have free access to the scanner at the place I work, and while I am extremely grateful for that, I am also grateful to have one specifically for my art.  Scanning can be finicky and wreak or shades and colors--but I am putting that all behind me.  Early Christmas to me!  Here is a sample scan; it is straight from the scanner, no adjustments or edits made:

Like looking right at my sketchbook.  World: Rocked.

My first GIF

So we had an assignment to do an animated GIF (essentially a 2D animation on loop).  I had only previously done hand drawn animations and they are the WORST.  I do not like drawing every single frame or drawing hundreds of pictures for 20 seconds of animation.  But I have seen the light!!!  For this assignment we were to do the drawing on the computer.  What would have taken me I don't know how many hours I took down to about one.  Very exciting.  Here is the design for my character:

Caricatures

So for one of my classes we are focusing on caricatures right now and we were told to do one male and one female celebrity.  For no specific reason I chose these two:

p.s. The colors were hard to get right on the computer.

"H"

This was a class assignment, which is why it's in graphite--I wouldn't have chose graphite to do an art piece except now I might be more prone to do so.  The object was to choose a letter and draw 4 things that started with said letter.  I chose a sports theme and in case it's a bit obscure mine are: hook shot, Heisman, hockey mask, and home run.

Shapely Tabby

I had an assignment for my class to draw a bunch of shapes and then turn the one I liked the most into an actual object drawn inside of that shape.  I sketched out a few inside of different shapes to see which one I like best.

Here is the one I ended up choosing:

Natural Monsters Re-Hashed

So I did another tree monster and create a cloud guy, too.  I have named them Shadrock, Treeshac, and Acumulo. BA-BOOM!

The uncolored version.

I decided to go with the shaded yet flat coloring--Japanese block print style.

Cougars go 2-0!

The BYU Cougars defeated the Weber State Wildcats 45-13!  A drawing for every game; here's the latest!

Natural Monsters

So we had a class assignment of drawings rocks, tress, and clouds and then making an evil monsters from one of these.  I did two yesterday just messing around but I really like them, so here they are!

Mo B. Grillin

Here's a little character I started playing around with today, went through a few tries before coming up with this.

I'm working on his house, it will be the same basic shape, but looks more like his head with less going on up top.

Sidewalk Chalk

So my wife wanted a caramel apple and at the Rocky Mountain Fudge place they gave us free sidewalk chalk because they are doing a thing called "Chalk the Block."  Here was our Sunday activity.

70's Phil Jackson

Nasty, hairy, and all of his cocaine (it was the NBA in the 70's, after all).

Manteca: My Inspiration

So I my wife and I went back to Manteca and I saw some things that I had to draw.  Here are a few of them:

The Weird, The Odd, and The Useless

So while reading some comic books (graphic novels, whatever you want to call them) I started thinking about some lame superheroes I've seen/know about.  I decided that the rest of the world should see them, just through the scope of my art.  Here it is:

"You didn't change that."

So I recently had an opportunity to do a political cartoon and have it published.  The offer was given to me by a friend of mind who had an idea for one, and he asked me to draw it for him.  I figured commissioned stuff is fun to do and I had better get used to it anyway.  It was put on the website for Utah largest newspaper (here's the link for now--not sure when it will be taken off: http://www.deseretnews.com/opinion/cartoons ) and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will be published in the physical newspaper.  So just remember, this is not necessarily my view, just my art.  Enjoy!

"Always Funny" Finished

So I finished this, and Ashley started talking about Salvador Dali and calling my stuff "surrealist."  At first I thought it was weird, I felt like surrealist artists were easily labelled as crazy loons; I've always felt like my chemical balances were correct--and I still think they are.  But the more I looked at I thought, "That's definitely not realism."  So here it is--oh, by the way, the little green monster's name is Murphy.

Always Funny.

Here's something I'm doing in my sketchbook right meow.  I think this part is a bit humorous; when is a bloodhound with a fake arrow through his head not funny!?

Sunday Sketch: Don't Wake the Annelid

Wouldn't it be funny if it wasn't an annelid?  Anyway, StumbleUpon took me to an awesome page about sketchbooks and it inspired me to do some things different.  Here's my first drawing after seeing said page.  The drawing styles are different to illustrate the different levels.  Enjoy!

I Wanted to Coldcock This Guy

I saw this guy walking in the Regency parking lot and he instantly gave me 3 reasons to punch him:

1. His clothes
2. He said "homeboy" in a serious tone
3. He pronounced the name as "Zatch"

Bellyflop!

My friend had me do a drawing as part of a "gift" to his parents.  No idea why that is in quotes.  The rats are used as a symbol of the sketchiness of a certain establishment.

Sunday Sketches: Late

Very behind on Sunday Sketches, so here's a few recents:

Ashley and I went to dinner and saw this sculpture that was just a shape.  A very intriguing shape.  So I played around with it.

Our teacher on Sunday.
Elvis looking like a twinkie.

Seinfeld Characters

Just a couple.

"Giddy up!"
